Cooking My Ikan Patin

Semalam I cuba masak my ikan patin. Finally. I didn't know the recipe , so I googled for it on the net as I wanted the Temerloh way of cooking it. Hari tu pun dah tanya my orang Pahang friend Kak Lizza but just to double check on the recipe takut ada yang I terlepas pandang. I got one recipe Ikan Patin Masak Tempoyak Ala Temerloh from the net. Katanya it's from her mom's recipe. So , I ikut je lah......kalau salah recipe yang cik adik ni kasi , salah laa I.
Ni jagung yang Nita kasi from Cameron Highlands........my mom suruh rebus , dia nak makan after buka puasa nanti. Mak nak makan.........buatkan.

Hmmmm........antara ingredients for the ikan patin dish. There's timun-tempoyak-asam keping-daun kesum-bunga kantan-kunyit-bawang merah-cili padi. In the recipe it says , 20 biji cili padi......mak oiii! Berapi telinga tuh! I love spicy food but if it's too too spicy , then for me it's a total spoiler. I just do not know how to appreciate extremely spicy food. For my cooking today , I cut down the quantity of chilies to just 6 chili padi + 2 red chilies. Also in the recipe , it says......kunyit + bawang merah + chilies - ditumbuk halus. Hmmmmm.......in my cooking vocabulary , it's blender! Tak sampai 30 saat dah halus........hehehe! Kes orang malas laa ni , tapi ada hati nak masak from scratch......

In the recipe , it says to mix all blended ingredients with the tempoyak. Hmmmm........can't I just put all the blended ingredients in a pot & add the tempoyak & add water & just mix it in the pot instead? After all nak kena masukkan all ingredients dalam periuk jugak right? What-e-ber laah dik non.......I'll stick to logic & shortcut & not wanting to make my life miserable just because of having to gaulkan bahan-bahan tumbuk dengan tempoyak then masukkan ke dalam periuk.......huhuhu! I don't have the patience.........puh-lease forgive me......

So , everything's in the pot , simmer it for a while then add the patins. Yes , Kak Lizza told me that her mom will slow cook the fish & remember not to mend with the patins too much as the flesh is very tender.....OK , checked.

In the recipe , it's stated that kena letak Timun Cina......hmmm.....in Kelantan timun cina is known as Watermelon / Tembikai. So , I counter checked with my Kelantanese daddy.........yup! He confirmed that in Kelantan timun cina is tembikai. Lohhh......biar betul? kena letak tembikai dalam dish ni.......I dah laa bodoh memasak but this sounded more stupid OK. Tempoyak-Tembikai-Ikan Patin? Seriously aaa? Looking at confused me , my dad then said , mungkin dia suruh letak kulit tembikai kot......hmmm.....kelakar but make sense laa jugak coz kulit tembikai tu will eventually lenyor kalau dah lama tenggek dalam kuah panas.......BUT , alah........wa yang masak........suka hati wa laa nak letak apa pun kan????? Logic tells that it has to be just plain ol'cucumber. So I pun guna timun Jepang....hehehe! timun Jepun yang Nita kasi.......end of timun story. Kot memang ye kena latak tembikai........hmmmm *maybe any orang Temerloh can certify this*......mungkin next time , I'll follow lah.

At this point , ku masukkan juga kuntuman bunga-bunga kantan yang telah ku belah dua..........Susun ayat klasik siol! Hehehe!

Then in goes some daun kesom......carefully stirring the daun kesom around the patins.......

The end result.......MP memang tak makan laa coz I dah letak tempoyak. I asked my dad.......macamana rasa? He said OK. Hmmmm.....OK la tu!


Next.............nak goreng sayur sikit. Nak kena habiskan sayur-sayur dari Cameron Highlands nih.....kang mengarok pulak kakak ku sebab penat-penat dia bawak turun sayur dari bukit tapi I tak masak........apa nak buat dengan kobis purple ni? Selalu kat hotel depa letak dalam salad. Well peeps........to me , kobis is still a kobis tak kira lah warna oren sekali pun........so I decided to cook it like I used to , tak yah nak ikut rule sangat lah , belasah je. Orang tak buat , I buat. Here my dumb & dumber version of Kobis Ungu Goreng.....hahaha! Barney....Barney........

Macam biasa , tumis bawang merah & bawang putih,,,,,,*macam laa orang tak tahu goreng sayur*......hehehe!

Throw in some prawns......when the prawns turned coral.........

.......masukkan the purple cabbage........quickly stir fried it.......add some nam pla sauce........
Stir stir stir.......siap. Purple & orange........MP mesti pikir 2 kali nak telan benda alah warna ungu ni....hehehe! Dah boleh bayang muka beku dia dah........


Hahhhh! Next! Am making ayam masak kicap.......tapi malas nak goreng the chicken dulu.......no time.

My dumb & dumber way of preparing the dish.........tumis halia + garlic + shallots + chili paste at one go. Seriously,,,,,,,,tak de hal......hahaha!

Then bila the spices dah masak , masukkan ayam & add a bit of water. Simmer it till air masakan tu kering sikit........

Then add some kicap manis & asam keping........also add some S&S to taste.......

Bila ayam dah masak , masukkan whatever veggies you want lah. In my case , I letak onions + tomatoes + green chilies. Mix 'em well and heat off.

Dah........tu je.....tak kuasa nak masak anything lagi dah. Ni I masak half portion of chicken. Tapi masa my mom buka puasa , Yna repeat makan sekali dengan nenek dia & both of them habiskan the chicken. MP belum makan lagi , so......for dinner , I masak ayam kicap ni lagi satu round using another half portion of chicken.

That's for lunch today.


Tadi siang , lepas masak........terus I makan lunch. Nak rasa kuah patin yang I masak sendiri for the first time in my 37 years of life............

Bismillahirahmanirrahhim............please don't fail me dear patins........

It turned out OK for my tekak.......biasa laa.......bila dah habis makan patin , tinggal nasi sikit coz nak rasa my ayam & my sayur purple tu.......Tekak I lepas...........
